Why the game-length switch matters
ERA means earned runs per game, and "a game" has been nine innings for as long as the statistic has existed. Most slow-pitch and fast-pitch softball, and a great many youth leagues, play seven. If you work out a softball pitcher's ERA with the nine-inning formula you inflate it by about 29% against the league she actually pitches in.
Neither number is wrong — they answer different questions — but a league's own leaderboard should use the league's own game length, and both should say which they used. That is what the switch above does.
What each one means
- AVG
- Hits divided by at-bats. Walks are not at-bats, so a walk neither helps nor hurts it.
- OBP
- How often a batter reaches base: hits, walks and hit-by-pitches over at-bats, walks, hit-by-pitches and sacrifice flies. Sacrifice bunts are left out; sacrifice flies are not.
- SLG
- Total bases per at-bat — a double counts twice, a home run four times. It measures power, not getting on base.
- OPS
- OBP plus SLG. Crude — it adds two numbers with different denominators — but it sorts hitters surprisingly well.
- ERA
- Earned runs per game's worth of innings. Earned excludes runs that scored because of errors.
- WHIP
- Walks plus hits per inning pitched: how many runners a pitcher lets on, ignoring how they got on.
