Some Things I Think I Think: One bat not enough for Red Sox’ offseason shopping list
1+ day, 19+ hour ago (878+ words) " It's going to take a while to find out how the offseason is going to unfold for the Red Sox. The team has said it intends to add another front-line starting pitcher and an impact bat. But in reality, one bat won't be enough. Let's say the Sox are successful in bringing back Alex Bregman, which would be the right move. Simply retaining Bregman won't be enough of an upgrade for the team's lineup, however. That much should be obvious by now. The Sox lacked sufficient power a year ago, and that was never more obvious that in the postseason, when slug becomes even more of a necessity. Retaining Bregman would merely get them back to where they were. They need Bregman and another bat. Or, if Bregman leaves to sign elsewhere, they need to make two additions. They could…...
This Day in MLB History: The Pirates draft Roberto Clemente
2+ day, 22+ hour ago (288+ words) I'd say this worked out pretty well for the Pirates. 1954 - The Pirates draft Roberto Clemente from the Triple A roster of the Brooklyn Dodgers. 1957 - Mickey Mantle edges out Ted Williams to win the MVP Award in the American League. Mantle hit .365 with 34 home runs. Williams led the AL with a .388 average, 38 home runs and a .731 slugging percentage. Two Chicago writers listed Williams ninth and 10th on their ballots. 1960 - The American League proposes that both leagues expand to nine teams in 1961 and begin interleague play. Expansion will take place in the American League in 1961, but interleague play won't happen until 1997. 1961 - Frank Robinson becomes the first Red player in 21 years to win the MVP Award. 1968 - Johnny Bench beats out Jerry Koosman for the NL Rookie of the Year Award. Bench is the third Reds player to win the award in the last six…...
Chicago White Sox nontender Mike Tauchman, Cam Booser and Tim Elko while keeping Derek Hill on 1-year deal
3+ day, 10+ hour ago (599+ words) Mike Tauchman had a productive 2025 for the Chicago White Sox " when healthy. The outfielder battled various injuries, limiting him to 93 games. The Sox on Friday declined to tender 2026 contracts to Tauchman, pitcher Cam Booser and first baseman Tim Elko, making them free agents. Additionally, the Sox avoided arbitration with outfielder Derek Hill, agreeing to terms on a one-year, $900,000 contract. Tauchman, 34, slashed .263/.356/.400 with 17 doubles, one triple, nine home runs and 40 RBIs after signing a one-year deal with the Sox in December. He was also the team's nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award. The Palatine native began the 2025 season on the injured list with a strained right hamstring. He was activated on April 6 but went back on the IL on April 10 with a right hamstring strain suffered the previous evening while trying to score the tying run in the ninth inning against…...
Twins unexpectedly bring back Trevor Larnach, trade for backup catcher Alex Jackson
3+ day, 11+ hour ago (855+ words) Larnach will compete for playing time in the corners. David Berding / Getty Images The Twins traded for a backup catcher and, somewhat surprisingly, offered a contract to arbitration-eligible outfielder Trevor Larnach on Friday, hanging onto a productive yet redundant player due a decent raise. Hours before deciding to keep Larnach ahead of the 4 p.m. CT deadline, the Twins acquired catcher Alex Jackson from Baltimore in exchange for minor-league infielder Peyton Eeles. To make space for Jackson, who projects to be Ryan Jeffers" primary backup, the Twins designated outfielder DaShawn Keirsey Jr. for assignment. The Twins also agreed to terms on a one-year, $1.225-million deal with arbitration-eligible reliever Justin Topa and offered contracts to all of their remaining arbitration-eligible players. Arbitration eligible for a second time this offseason, Larnach finished with a career high 17 homers and 60 RBIs in 2025 while hitting .250/.323/.404. But with…...

3+ day, 13+ hour ago (259+ words) The Athletics have been quietly building their foundation over the years, and it is starting to pay off. The club is coming off one of its best seasons in years, thanks to the help of some rookies who performed well above expectations."
