Starr’s 7 questions: Are the Red Sox deep enough to trade away pitchers?
2+ hour, 1+ min ago (743+ words) Seven questions to take you out of November and into what will almost certainly be a very interesting December for the Red Sox. The Red Sox needed to open 40-man roster spots in order to protect eligible prospects from next month's Rule 5 Draft, but I'm surprised at how they accomplished that. Namely, sacrificing lefty relievers Brennan Bernardino and Chris Murphy by trading them to the Colorado Rockies and Chicago White Sox, respectively. Murphy's trade at least made some sense. In Chicago, he joins a rebuilding team and can truly define and take ownership of a role, something he never really had the opportunity to do in Boston. Never mind the fact that the Red Sox are just beginning to be a pitching development factory and cutting two talented, club-controlled lefties feels a bit like putting the cart before the horse,…...

MLB notes: Moment of truth may be near for Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens
2+ day, 2+ hour ago (1058+ words) A couple of weeks ago when the Baseball Hall of Fame announced its Contemporary Era player ballot, the biggest headline was that Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens would once again be considered despite drawing little support their first time in front of the committee. But tucked away at the bottom of the announcement was a detail that could have major implications for the pair's Cooperstown hopes. "Additionally, any candidate that does not receive at least five of 16 votes in multiple appearances on Era Committee ballots will not be eligible for future ballot consideration," the announcement continues. "Candidates who receive at least five of 16 votes will remain eligible for the following cycle of Era Committee consideration but will not necessarily be placed on the subsequent ballot." Translation, it's time to settle the Bonds and Clemens question, now and possibly forever. Fred…...
Red Sox reliever commits to play for Team USA in World Baseball Classic
2+ day, 15+ hour ago (181+ words) After a couple of injury-plagued seasons, Red Sox right-hander Garrett Whitlock re-established himself as one of the sport's premier relievers last year, helping give Boston one of the best bullpens in baseball. Now Whitlock will have a chance to represent his country at the highest level. Whitlock announced via social media on Saturday that he has committed to play for Team USA in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. The 29-year-old is among a handful of notable players who are confirmed for the USA roster, a group that also includes New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge, Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes, Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh and Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. Whitlock recently wrapped up a remarkable comeback season in which he posted a 2.25 ERA with 91 strikeouts in 72 innings as Boston's primary eighth inning set-up man. He did so…...
Red Sox cut ties with two players ahead of Friday’s non-tender deadline
3+ day, 13+ hour ago (582+ words) Friday marked the deadline for all MLB clubs to tender contracts to players still under team control, and any player who isn't offered a deal prior to the deadline is considered "non-tendered" and made a free agent. For the Red Sox, the day went exactly as expected. The Red Sox announced they have non-tendered two players, first baseman Nathaniel Lowe and right-hander Josh Winckowski, formally cutting both players loose. All 26 other unsigned players under team control were tendered contracts. Both Lowe and Winckowski had already been designated for assignment earlier this week to clear space on the 40-man roster for new additions, so their being non-tendered was a formality. Lowe was entering his final year of arbitration, and according to MLB Trade Rumors' arbitration projections he was expected to earn $13.5 million this coming season. That would have been a hefty…...
Where Red Sox stand heading into Friday’s non-tender deadline
4+ day, 2+ hour ago (976+ words) Tuesday was an unexpectedly chaotic day for the Red Sox, who swung four trades, designated two players for assignment and added three pitching prospects to the 40-man roster ahead of that evening's Rule 5 protection deadline. With all that business taken care of, plus Thursday's announcement that the Red Sox reached a deal to avoid arbitration with catcher Connor Wong, fans can expect a much quieter day Friday. Friday marks the deadline for MLB clubs to tender contracts to players under team control who don't already have long-term deals. For most players this is a fairly routine process, but occasionally a team might decide not to offer a contract to a certain player, either because they don't think they're worth the money they'd be in line to make or because they want to free up a roster spot. When that happens,…...
Gold Dust Twins Lynn and Rice reunite in Boston: ‘We’re tied forever’
4+ day, 2+ hour ago (829+ words) It's been over half a century, but the Gold Dust still hasn't settled. And when you see Fred Lynn and Jim Rice together, you hope it never will. At The Sports Museum's annual gala, The Tradition, on Tuesday night, the legendary Gold Dust Twins reunited and relived the glory days of 1970s Red Sox baseball when Rice presented Lynn with the Baseball Legacy Award. Keegan Bradley (golf), Gabby Thomas (track and field), Isaiah Thomas (basketball), Tim Thomas (hockey), and Vince Wilfork (football) were feted at the TD Garden event as well, receiving legacy awards for their achievements in their respective sports. Lynn, whose tremendous career predated his fellow honorees, was the night's exuberant grand finale. Along with moderator Tom Caron and an adoring audience, Lynn and Rice laughed and lightheartedly lamented their way down memory lane. All the way back to…...
Red Sox avoid arbitration with Connor Wong, sign catcher to one-year deal
4+ day, 19+ hour ago (267+ words) The deadline for MLB clubs to tender contracts to players under team control isn't until Friday, but the Red Sox took care of some important business early. The Red Sox announced Thursday that they have agreed to a one-year contract with catcher Connor Wong. The deal allows the two sides to avoid salary arbitration and likely ensures Wong will return as Boston's back-up catcher in 2026. According to Channel 7's Ari Alexander, the deal is for $1.375 million. With the signing, the Red Sox now only have four arbitration-eligible players remaining. Originally expected to serve as Boston's starter heading into 2025, Wong endured a challenging season plagued by injuries and inconsistency at the plate. Wong batted .190 with a .500 OPS in 63 games and did not record his first RBI until June 23, and he was quickly supplanted as the club's starter by rookie Carlos Narvaez,…...
MLB announces 3 new media agreements, ESPN to take over MLB.TV
5+ day, 14+ hour ago (357+ words) Major League Baseball has new three-year agreements with a trio of entertainment giants for the 2026-28 seasons, the league announced Wednesday. ESPN, NBC Universal, and Netflix are divvying up significant pieces of the pie, but the renewed covenant with ESPN is the notable headliner. For much of the last year it seemed they were on the precipice of uncoupling after over three decades, after the two "mutually agreed" to end their agreement last February, three years before the seven-year extension they signed in "21 was due to expire. Now, they will be more intertwined than ever in what ESPN"s press release called "a new fan-focused, multi-faceted agreement." ESPN is also six MLB teams" new local in-market streaming home: the San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners, Arizona Diamondbacks, Cleveland Guardians, Minnesota Twins and Colorado Rockies. The Disney-owned sports media conglomerate will also retain…...
