Former Mammoth Matias Maccelli punishes his old team

3+ week, 2+ day ago (922+ words) The Utah Mammoth went into this road trip hoping to steal wins on back-to-back nights, just like they did on their previous voyage " but it was not to be. Their matchup with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday, while hard-fought, did not fall in their favor. Here's the story. It looked like the first period would be the same as the first in Buffalo on Tuesday: goalless. But with 1:11 to go, Toronto area natives Lawson Crouse and Michael Carcone connected for a true third line type of goal, playing hard in the corners and going to the net. About five minutes into the second, William Nylander capitalized on a slot chance with a delayed penalty to tie it up, after which former Mammoth Matias Maccelli set up Auston Matthews to give the Leafs the lead. A Mikhail Sergachev blast from…...

Legacy of joy and humor left by Frank Layden lives on

4+ hour, 35+ min ago (409+ words) As I was watching the Utah Jazz's NBA Cup game against the Oklahoma City Thunder last Friday at the Delta Center, I noticed a woman seated in the family section (where the players' families usually sit, near the Jazz's locker room tunnel). My eyesight isn't great and I was on the other side of the arena so I couldn't quite make out exactly who it was. Who was she? And what was she reading?! I had to know. Some quick reconnaissance in the locker room after the game and the truth was revealed. It was Verna, Lauri Markkanen's wife. He got her on FaceTime and she showed me the book she had with her. Oh just a little classic Russian literature. Some light reading of Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina, that's all. A woman after my own heart. What a legend....

Is it time to end Major League Baseball’s antitrust exemption?

3+ week, 1+ day ago (868+ words) Two U.S. senators, including one from Utah, are taking another swing at ending Major League Baseball's century-old exemption from antitrust laws. Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, and Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., filed a friend-of-the-court brief urging the Supreme Court to overturn a longstanding precedent that has shielded professional baseball from the nation's antitrust laws. Lee in a statement said baseball for too long has enjoyed an exemption from the competition laws that apply to every other professional sport and business in the country. "As I've said before, baseball understands best of all the benefits of competition," said Lee, chair of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy, and Consumer Rights. "Sadly, our Supreme Court has historically balked at the opportunity to overturn a wrongly decided case, and subject professional baseball to the same competition laws as every other professional sport. It…...

Following the win, Claudia Zornoza, Imani Dorsey and Olivia Griffitts were recognized on the pitch with their families. How pitcher Jordan Andreas is blazing trails for girls in baseball

1+ week, 2+ day ago (1851+ words) A baseball collided with the face of 11-year-old Jordan Andreas, who had been standing at the plate. Andreas wiped away the blood and shed just a single tear " the only tear Standout Baseball's Kevin Batista had ever seen roll down Andreas' cheek. Andreas, who grew up in Las Vegas before moving to St. George a few years ago, was the only girl in Batista's Standout Baseball infield training class with a dozen boys. "There was a time right there where she could have been there, and all those boys would have said, "Oh, there she goes. She's a girl. Can't handle it," Batista said. But Andreas toughed it out, as well as all the other shots to the finger and chest she took " not to mention all the mental shots " because, as Batista said, "she's just built different." "There's always…...

Utah Royals FC players reflect on challenging 2025 season and hopes for 2026

3+ week, 1+ day ago (932+ words) Halfway through Utah Royals FC's 2025 season, sporting director Kelly Cousins thought to herself, "How are we here again?" The Royals had just one win in 13 games. Around this point last year, the team was 2-11-2 but found momentum under new head coach Jimmy Coenraets and won five more games to close out its inaugural season. The Royals had hoped to carry that momentum into the 2025 season, but that wasn't the case. But "that really allowed us to reflect," Cousins told reporters Friday during exit interviews. Cousins, whose contract was officially extended Friday, then met with Coenraets and Jason Kreis, the Real Salt Lake legend who was named president of soccer operations last week. In that meeting, Cousins and Kreis told Coenraets that "whatever we're doing, it's just not working." They then created a document called the Royals Way. "It's really developing…...
